How to Check and Fill Your Planetary Oil

In general, you don’t have to change the oil on the planetary part of your mixer often. Because it’s a closed system, the oil level remains steady and only goes down if there is a leak. If you have a leak, a Hobart technician should be called out immediately, because this can damage your mixer. With that said, you should change the oil on your planetary every few months to ensure your mixer functions at the highest level. Below is the step-by-step guide to complete the task.

Step 1: Go to your J-Cup, which is held by two little wing nuts, one on each side of the J-Cup, and remove them; this can be done using your fingers. Once you unscrew them, slide the lid off.

Step 2: Once the J-Cup lid is removed, you’ll notice a small screw on the right side; remove the screw with an Allen wrench. Once done you’ll see a small hole, which is where you check and fill the planetary oil if needed.

Step 3: Check the planetary oil to see if it’s low; if the oil isn’t level with the bottom thread of the screw hole, you know you need to fill it. If it needs filling, continue on to step four; if not, replace the screw, slide the J-Cup lid back on, and screw in the wing nuts to secure it.

Step 4: To fill your planetary oil, use a squirt bottle or a funnel with some sort of tube; this makes it easier to fill. Put it directly in the hole, and fill it with oil until it reaches the bottom thread.

Step 5: Reattach the bolt nice and tight with your Allen wrench, replace the J-Cup lid, and secure the wing nuts.

How to Change the Transmission Oil on Your Hobart Mixer

Changing the transmission oil in your Hobart Mixer is a more common practice than changing the oil in your planetary. You’ll need to remove the J-Cup lid and the bolt in your J-Cup in order to reach a bolt located directly behind your planetary that is essential for changing your transmission oil. Therefore, any time you need to change the transmission oil in your Hobart, you’ll need to follow steps one through three in the above guide.

Step 1: Remove the top lid of your commercial mixer. You’ll find 2 to 3 screws on top keeping it secure; remove them with your ¾ quarter wrench. Once the lid is removed, you’ll notice a long spout toward the front; use a wrench to remove the top and open it. This is where you’ll fill the oil.

Step 2: Follow steps 1 through 3 on how to change your planetary oil. Locate the bolt directly behind the planetary, grab your ¾ quarter wrench and begin to unscrew; once loosened, you should be able to remove it with your hand.

Step 3: Be sure you place a bucket directly below the hole behind the planetary before you completely unscrew the bolt; this is where the oil on your transmission will drain from, and the bucket will catch it. Let it drain for roughly 5 to 15 minutes to ensure all the oil is fully drained.

Step 4: Once all the transmission oil is drained, go back to the top of the machine where the spout is and use a funnel to begin pouring new oil into the hole. Use the sight glass on the right side of the machine to ensure you don’t overfill the oil.

Step 5: Fill the transmission oil until it’s about halfway between the bottom and the oil level on the sight glass. Turn the mixer on for about 30 seconds to let it saturate the gears. Stop the mixer and check the level again; you may notice it went down a bit, but that’s okay.

Step 6: Continue filling the transmission oil until it reaches the oil level mark on the sight glass, then turn the mixer back on and let it run for another 30 seconds or so. Turn it off again and check the level. If it’s gone down a bit again, that’s okay. Repeat the process until it hits the oil line.

Step 7: Reattach the spout on the top using a wrench; reattach the bolt behind the planetary and make sure it’s secure. Next, complete steps 4 and 5 with the above planetary guide.

This step-by-step guide will save you time and money when you need to change the oil on your Hobart Mixer, but, if ever you have a leak, you’ll need professional assistance. One ¾ quarter open-end wrench, a few large Allen wrenches, a bucket, a funnel, and a screwdriver is all you need to get this job done. When it comes to saving your restaurant money, you simply need to invest in a few do-it-yourself tutorials.
